MYLA

And So To Bedford

The interiors are understated but effective, with Parisian-style white-clothed tables and glass-topped wood dividers separating the bar area from the dining room. Packed out any night of the week with sharp-suited lawyers and media execs propping up the bar, it's like an extremely upmarket All Bar One for those who appreciate good food, good wine, and, of course, good company. Naturally, you don't get any of those at the aforementioned chain, but you do get them by the plate-load here.

Food-wise, patrons can expect a menu sandwiched somewhere between British and European; Gunpowder indulged in baked crottin, rocket and beetroot for starter, cote de boeuf with Bernaise sauce for main, and a gorgeous cheese plate for dessert - all washed down with plenty of red, of course.

We particularly liked the house wine list, which is split into four headings for dummies; honest, decent, good and staff picks. Though we have to be, er, honest - we'd did feel a little rude asking for a 'decent' glass of wine. There is, of course, a more extensive wine list for liquid-lovers.

Perfect for pre-theatre drinks or a casual post-work dinner, Bedford & Strand may be below street-level but it's certainly not below par. In fact, it's high up there with the cream of the city-based crop.
