Fiddler On The Roof

![]() Rating: GGGGG Located just off Kensington High Street, stepping into the sleek marble lobby of the Roof Gardens is like escaping from the daily grind of London Town. A receptionist is on-hand to tell you that you are, in fact, in the right place, before a lift is called and you are catapulted 100-foot up from the ground floor to the first level. Here you are greeted by a friendly member of staff, who leads you outside to watch the sunset over the capital on a wooden deck. We ordered two Mojitos - Gunpowder's signature cocktail - before being lead to a discreet table outside. The view is incredible, and we were surprised that Kensington had been keeping such a sweeping panorama from us for such a long time. The decor is, of course, part of Babylon's appeal. Decked out in gorgeous acid-greens and damask patterns for a distinct nature theme, the interiors are sleek, contemporary and downright sexy. Leaf motifs abound, as do glossy surfaces and sharp lines. The toilets are particularly impressive, with an oversized fish tank built into the wall where a mirror should be. While it may be a little 'Chinese restaurant' for some, we have to admit that we were pretty taken with it. That said, Babylon doesn't solely rely on its stylish surroundings to lure West London power-players and Louboutin-wearing socialities through its doors; its menu its small but perfectly-formed, with dishes such as Button Mushroom Risotto and Confit Fillet of Sea Bass making an appearance. As you can imagine, Gunpowder over-indulged with a starter of pigeon served with apricot puree, almonds, baby spinach and peach salad, a main-course of duck leg and a shared cheese plater for afters, complete with oatcakes, apple chutney, grapes and celery. All washed down with a bottle of Spanish Rioja Crianza 2005, it's hardly surprising we practically rolled out onto the high-street after. With a nightclub beneath and gorgeous courtyards, trickling fountains and manicured gardens surrounding it, the Kensington Roof Gardens is truly deserving of its long-standing reputation. Babylon, as we found out, is the shiny jewel in its crown. www.roofgardens.virgin.com / Images: Kensington Roof Gardens ![]() |
