Standing Tall

Instantly recognisable by its diamond-shaped summit, the building will form a bold new addition to New York's legendary skyline. To be built in the north-east corner of Memorial Park, the tower will comprise four interconnected blocks with column-free offices that rise up to floor 64. Above this will be function rooms, complete with views out over the river, park and city. The slanted roof is designed to address the memorial below. As one of the most important architectural challenges in recent times, Foster + Partners needed to create something that was driven by both memory and a sense of rebirth. And with this, the British firm may just succeed. But while the tower does symbolise resurrection, we have to admit that we're a little nervous; misinterpreted as arrogance by extremists, 200 Greenwich Street is likely to become another target. We just hope it's built with this mind.
