MYLA

It Was All Yellow

The store, based in prime position on London's Oxford Street, begun its celebrations with an elaborate party at the end of April and will continue its festivities well into May and the rest of the summer. The celebrations begin outside with the store's famous windows, which are always dressed up for the occasion; May to mid-June will see windows from past decades, from a 1920s boudoir to a 1930s 'great kick-off' football display, while July until the end of August will feature ideas for future modes of living. As if that wasn't enough, the canopy over the store's Oxford Street entrance will be installed with a giant neon sign that reads 'Open To The World Since 1909' - a phrase taken from an original advertisement that appeared on opening day all those years ago. Inside, the party continues with a specially-formed troupe - 'The Selfridgettes' - hosting a range of events that include fashion shows, live music and even bingo. The best bit, however, is that a number iconic designers will be launching a range of limited-edition products throughout May, all in the store's signature yellow. Goodies include an avant-garde yellow dress by Giles Deacon and a pair of classic yellow Converse trainers. Finally, the anniversary will be marked by a special exhibition in the Ultralounge, found on the ground floor. Taking a look at Selfridges from 1909 up until the present day, the exhibition will feature rare archive images from the past, a sculpture of carrier bags from all decades, a book signed by famous authors who've launched their books at the store, and a glass table signed with a diamond-tipped pen by visiting celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Kylie Minogue. Phew! We sure wish our birthday was celebrated in such extravagant fashion!
