A distinctly artsy couple, it's hardly surprising that Robert and Cortney's properties are eclectically-designed. Experts at mixing modern with vintage in a style they call 'Vintage Noveauxx', Sixx Design has become renowned for transforming interiors such as lofts and wrecks into havens of sumptuous design, all furnished to the highest standard with rare collectibles the couple have collected on their far-flung travels. The pair's first project was a condemned townhouse in Chelsea, which they completely resorted by themselves; next was an entire block on Thompson Street, which ultimately sold for a record-breaking price tag. We caught up with the hip couple to ask them a few probing Gunpowder questions.
Gunpowder: Describe the Sixx Design aesthetic in sixx words.
Cortney & Robert: Whimsical, fun, different, curious, modern, vintage, timeless.
G: Do you both have different styles? Or do you work together to create a cohesive style?
C&R: Robert’s style leans more towards the clean and modern, while Cortney loves the look and feel of vintage. Together we create a unique, melded style.
G: What are your strengths?
C&R: We are both risk-takers and always focus on the present, and we have the ability to stay calm even when we have a lot going on at once.
G: To date, what is your proudest design?
C&R: Our current house in Soho (NYC) at 5 Centre Market is our best work, but we are building a new glass house on the West Side highway in the Village, among the Richard Meier towers, that is going to be quite spectacular. It will be done by the end of the year, and it will be our new home.
G: What has been your most challenging design?
C&R: Our most challenging job was building a bowling alley and games arcade (along with living/entertaining space) in a basement of a huge residence using no natural light, but still creating a vibrant, colorful, airy place to hang out in, and we succeeded.
G: How do you see Sixx Design developing in the future?
C&R: Sixx Design is always evolving, and we always have new projects. We’re in the middle of designing a boutique hotel (all the rooms, public spaces and outdoor spaces). For that project, we have designed Sixx-branded rugs with The Rug Company in England. We also have lots of other residential projects in Manhattan, and we’re currently collaborating with industrial designer Stephen Burks on a line of furniture.
G: What would be your words of widsom for all aspiring designers out there?
C&R: "Trust your own instincts. Your mistakes might as well be your own instead of someone else's..." Billy Wilder, director.
