Eastern Promise

Opened by Alan Yau, owner of the immensely-popular Wagamama chain, Hakkasan is one of just two Michelin-starred Chinese restaurants in the city (the other being its equally spectacular sibling, Yauatcha). Set deep underground, the darkened diner isn't your usual Chinese takeaway joint; here it's all about beautiful fretwork, sumptuous purple lighting and thumping club music. The bar, which is backlit in blue, is most impressive and stretches 16-metres from one side of the restaurant to the other, while the reception area is more like that of an exclusive nightclub than a Soho eatery. Renowned French designer/decorator Christian Liaigre is behind the sexy décor, while cosmopolitan fashion designer Hussein Chalayan can be credited for the staff's impeccable uniforms. Aside from its amazing aesthetics, Hakkasan's menu ain't half bad, either; feasting is indeed the order of the day here, with snack-sized starters such as dim-sum and mouthwatering mains such as lobster and wagyu beef. For true decadence, diners are urged to try the silver cod in champagne and Chinese honey. Simply breathtaking! Packed out with fabulously-dressed first-dates and sharp-suited power lunches, Hakkasan is an experience of both gastronomic and social proportions.
