Native New Yorker
Soho House was first brought to our attention during an episode of Sex and the City when Samantha steals a membership card so her and the girls can enjoy the rooftop pool, and we're ever so grateful. Located in Manhattan's achingly hip Meatpacking District, Soho House rises six storeys up from the pavement and is the summer home of filthy rich Upper East Siders who can't be bothered to drive to their beach houses in the Hamptons. Like many of the buildings in the area, Soho House is a converted warehouse and contains 24 bedrooms, a sumptuous spa, restaurant, bar and, of course, an alluring rooftop pool and terrace. The bedrooms are divided into four categories, Playpen, Playroom, Playhouse and Playground, and make use of their warehouse characteristics with soaring ceilings, explosed brick and original beams. Eclectic furnishings finish things off nicely. The Cowshed spa is an expanse of gloriously mismatched furniture and polished floors, with a series of beautifully decorated rooms offering every treatment imaginable. Meanwhile, The Club is where designer-clad members come to dine on steak and seafood under dazzling green Swarovski chandeliers. Of course, those who prefer a liquid diet can prop up the bar or lounge in the, er, lounge. But the rooftop pool is by far the biggest draw of Soho House, and what a pool it is! With incredible views out over West Village and of the Hudson River, this slice of sanctuary is one of the city's best-kept secrets (at least it was until that episode of SATC). Here guests can lounge on crisp white beds, sit at elegant tables or float in the shimmering turqoise water. Whether you choose to steal a membership like Kim Cattrall's character in the HBO series or buy one like actress Sarah Jessica Parker has done in real life, you've got to get into Soho House this summer by whichever means necessary.
