Open Sesame
Now referred to as a National Historic Landmark, The Plaza first opened in 1907. Overlooking Central Park, it didn't take long to attract Manhattan's filthy rich; famous faces to have strutted through the hotel's revolving glass doors include the likes of Marilyn Monroe and The Beatles. Then, after years at the top, The Plaza went quickly downhill and guests started checking-in elsewhere. With peeling wallpaper and 70s-style rooms, who could blame them? But now it's back, bigger and better than ever. So what's changed? Well, for a start, there's now 282 rooms, including 102 suites, all decked out in a gloriously over-the-top Louis XV French-style Elton John would be proud of. Each bathroom is clad with white marble, too, with 24-carat gold-plated Sherle Wagner fixtures. Downstairs, there's a new Champagne bar in the lobby, a spectacular stained-glass skylight, gleaming mosaic floors, sparkling chandeliers and gold-trimmed ceilings. Now restored to its former glory, a room here will set guests back around $1,000. Don't gasp - if Macaulay Culkin can do it, then why can't you?
